I have a hunch I'm not alone in saying that I have two main challenges when it comes to creating art: Space and Time. It's the physics of crafting: Where do I put my stuff, and when do I actually get to use it?! I'm happy to say, I seem to have finally found a good solution for the "where" question, at least for now. The "when?" Yeah... I got nothin'. Anyone??(The Scrapbox, closed, with Stella providing a visual scale)
Scott, the three cats and I share a two-bedroom townhouse (the cats take up most of the space). I bought this place last summer and I absolutely love it, but it's been interesting figuring out where to put our stuff. Up until a few weeks ago I had all my craft supplies crammed into plastic bins and stacked in a closet. Boy, did that ever makes it super fun and easy to do art on a whim! So, one night when I was perusing an issue of Cloth, Paper, Scissors (a.k.a. "The Great Enabler") and saw an ad for a contraption called The Original Scrapbox, my inner shopaholic started to hyperventilate. I couldn't navigate to the website fast enough, and, sisters and brothers, once I did, I was done for. I became a woman obsessed, so overcome with Product Lust I was willing to ravage my savings account, wipe out my Christmas bonus and compromise the virtue of my emergency-only credit card, all in the name of Scrapbox ownership. And that's exactly what I did.
(Perceptive readers will note that I did not in any way imperil my craft supply budget in order to purchase the Scrapbox...)
(The Wonderland that is the open Scrapbox)
And you're thinking, "Yeah, right, she's obviously getting a kickback from the Scrapbox people." Honey, I wish! If I were, I'd buy their desk, too. But just so I don't sound like an infomercial-- and because forewarned is forearmed-- let me offer a few caveats for anyone considering taking the plunge.
(Grey Kitty selects a shade of Distress Crackle Paint)
Promises of easy assembly notwithstanding, I feel like we should both get some kind of honorary engineering degree after putting this contraption together. For us, it was a two-person, multi-hour extravaganza, and it became one of those experiences that we'll someday look back on and laugh, if you get my drift. I recommend a nice Beaujolais to make the process less painful.
Also, let's face it, the Scrapbox is expensive, and unless you happen to luck into a free shipping deal like I did, you'll need to tack another $300 onto the price for freight charges. (BTW, it's worth becoming the company's Facebook fan so you'll know when they're offering that promo again.)
(Scott, good-naturedly enduring the Scrapbox squish)
Finally, as smartly designed as it is, the Scrapbox still requires a good chunk of space when it's open. In our little shared office upstairs, we're talking about an entire wall. Poor, patient Scott has to do a sort of sideways limbo dance to sit down at his desk when I'm crafting, which is totally entertaining to watch but kind of sucks for him.
All that aside, I'm still convinced that this is one of the best purchases I've ever made. As George Carlin once wisely said, "We all just want a place for our stuff." I have to concur. And guys, I've shoved every craft supply I own into this baby, and there's still room to grow.
Good thing, too...

You MUST be my long lost sister! LOL A) I was looking at the Scrapbox too (I actually am blessed with a scraproom in my house but it just looks so darn COOL!) 2) I am DYING to add the Tim Holtz Sizzix stuff too my collection! Wow...love your blog. I came over from TH to check out your Valentine's tags and now I am hooked. Thanks for letting me stalk! LOL
Linda your scrapbox is fantastic! But what's even better is reading your fantastically coy and luxuriously humor-filled keyboard etchings! Girl - you gots yourself a grand gift....
OMG! You're as hilarious as I am!!! I'm fortunate enough to have my own studio but still have pretty much taken over our abode since all the kids have left! We share our space with a dog and cat...and yes, the Scrapbox is the Holy Grail and the perfect red lipstick, but you forgot the perfect black dress...OMG...I don't know what's worse...finding the perfect way to organize product or buying it...and I have no idea where I'm going to cram in all my new "Tim" stuff, but I will...somehow...uuummm...I could sleep on the sofa and if I can get my dh to sleep in his recliner...what would open up another bedroom...uuummm...
nice one... I am in the process of revamping my work space but i wanted more table top so have gone for storage underneath but can't wait till its finished and can get busy. I must say like everyone else that Tim stuff looks fab so will have to get some.....thats if theres any left, wish i had the pennies for the big one like yours have fun and happy crafting
Hugs x
One of my pals has one and I've taken the tour in person. You've done the thing justice...it really is the Holy Grail, especially for those who either don't have dedicated art space, or have to share their space.
My friend's box is in her living room, and it really does just look like a nice armoire when closed.
Very humorous post, by the way.
And just so you know.....there really is no such thing as "enough space." The more you have, the more you cram into it.
Enjoy your treasure!
Eileen
Wow that is very neat! I am going to get sucked into looking at that more I think.....
I have storage envy.

Oh my fur & whiskers! That is the coolest of the coolest!!!! Some beaujolais & I could be SO there...Storage desire...

I want one, I truly do. However, with my own craft room, I have now filled - well almost filled - all four walls with craft stuff, drawers and drawers and drawers and more drawers in Iris carts with stamps and supplies, hanging cupboards on the walls, a desk, a 12x12 paper tower, 2 filing cabinets with paper, and it goes on. My craft table is in the middle of the room and it is filled. I have file cabinets and drawers under the table. I have trouble believing that i could actually get it all in there. But i think i could make a huge dent in what is crammed in places. And it would definitely be neater. There is no way, hubby would let me buy this. But i have been trying to think of a creative way to create a similar type set up much more economically. since it is in a room (with a door) beautifully crafted furniture is not that important, but function and storage is highly important. Hubby has already said he will NOT paint my room. So it is boring white. But that is OK too, at this moment there is not enough "white" wall space to matter!

I have looked at the Scrapbox and drooled!! I think it would be so perfect!! I have my own room and am in the process of moving it to another location in my house, but all that aside, this would be a great addition. I mean really, we all need more space for more stuff, right? Yes, I agree. Congrats on getting one, lucky girl. You crack me up, I love your wit. Take care!! Sandy C.
I love reading your blog...I also have storage envy. Just finding stuff in my craft room is a challenge. But when I clean, I find marvelous "lost" items. Enjoy...I love your Valentine Tags also and have 8 days finished now.
from ALL THINGS TIM.
Linda,
I am the owner of the Original SrapBox and the inventor. I have never seen anyone describe it quite the way you do!!! If you don't mind, I would love to post some of your comments on our website. Kind regards, Glenn Jakins
Thanks, you guys! I love all your comments, and it's fun hearing about your own storage quandries and solutions! Anyone who crafts
understands the organizational challenges, right?
Glenn, you're more than welcome to post my comments on your site, and I'm honored that you asked!
Wow, what a set up you have, I would so loved to been a fly on your wall watching you set that baby up! Well maybe not you might have swatted me with all the laughing going on!LOL
Yes someday you will look back and laugh, I'd guess about the time you sit back and watch someone else take it down! LOL
it is a great setup!!!
Linda, I have the original Scrapbox too - the version before this one without the empty shelf space. I bought it at first glance a few years ago and I have loved it faithfully ever since! And man I still can't look back and laugh about the process of putting it together! I think it is going to take a few more years for laughter!
Trust me when I say, you will fill it! I am eyeing the desk now for my overflow!!
Have fun!
