Drunken Stampers Emboss and Paint Stuff!

We have a double-whammy challenge for you guys this week at the Drunken Stampers Crafting Lounge: Dry Emboss AND Paint. Both!

If you could have seen this as a work in progress, you'd...well, you'd have pointed and laughed and I wouldn't have blamed you one bit. This was not my finest hour(s) as a crafter. I think you guys all know what I mean. I kind of had this grand idea in mind for how I wanted to do the challenge, and babies, I stuck to it doggedly... even as I screwed it up over and over again! My earlier, "Oh, this will be quick and easy! I can bang out this card and go grab a Starbucks," became, "Holy cow, it's past dinner time! This card looks like a boozed-up monkey made it in the dark! And it just...keeps....getting...WORSE!"

Far later than was reasonable, I abandoned the original plan and made this Halloween Bingo card instead.

Out of curiosity, what's your typical process for creating? Do you visualize a finished piece and work toward creating it, or do you sit down with a vague idea in mind, pull out your supplies and start messing with stuff until you either like the result or are too weary to carry on? I definitely fall into the second category. I've always felt kind of bad about it, too, but the other day I had a great conversation with a dear friend who's a bona fide artist, and she told me she works in much the same way I do. That made me feel a whole lot better about my "process" (or lack thereof) and makes me feel better about the Halloween Bingo Card I ended up with for this challenge, too. So, thank you, Missy!

But, I digress. No matter how you approach your art, the Drunken Stampers (and our monkeys) would love to see what you do with dry embossing and paint! This challenge is open through next Friday, September 24!

Have a fabulously arty weekend!
~♥~ Linda

Linda you made me laugh today - a boozed up Monkey - now that's something I don't want to see...

I create by visualizing first in my head and then creating from there BUT my finished product is not always what I started with in my head. What I visualize (what a word) is my jumping off point. I've just learned to go with the flow and enjoy the process where ever it takes me!

Drunken monkeys - ROFL!!! I don't really have a set pattern to how I create - sometimes I have a very specific idea in mind, but it hardly ever works the way I think it will. And sometimes (more lately) I just start with one idea and build on it. I've been learning to embrace the spontaneous with the whole *art journal* thing. My last page I didn't know anything except I wanted to use my new *magenta* paint. Started with a background and went from there.

I think you could create a new challenge with the theme...What would a "boozed up monkey" create? LOL I do all of the above when I want to make something. Sometimes a vision works out wonderfully and other times OMG. I have embraced...that is part of the creative process. Happy Haunting...

Afraid I'm with you when it comes to crafting....I either get up first thing in the morning and know exactly what I'm going to do......The times I've got paint on my nightdress....lol or I start something and it kind of evolves.Off to check out the challenege

Linda you always make me laugh, love your boozed up monkey! But yes, I think that same monkey came to visit me this week. I didn't start with anything in mind, but that still didn't help me! LOL I love your card, great for Halloween! Hugs, Peg

You sent that boozed up monkey over here hun... my room is always messy when I am making something... and... I start with a very definite idea in my head and if it goes wonky, in the bin it goes.. I wish I would be able to just sit and make something as the mood takes me but I am too much of a control freak LOL
Well, anyways, I love this loads xx

I am loving all these Halloween-y treats. By the way, your process #2 is exactly how I write--and exactly how I tell my students they ought to write. What's the fun in knowing where you're going to end up?

Well, what you came up with surely turned out great. I love that embossing folder and will be one of my next purchases!!!

I usually have a vague idea but sometimes I just sit down and pull out stuff, just stuff that would look good together and see what comes up!!!

WOW! Linda! I completely dig this creation! Maybe being forced to go with a new idea was kismet!

Have a fabulous weekend!

Hi Linda! I love your bingo card! Even though it's not what you initially planned, it's still awesome. I've experienced that with my current painting. I wanted to include one thing for it - then decided I didn't want to do it and opted for something different. And I like how it turned out. :) Hope you are having a great weekend! Theresa

Do you have a pet boozed-up monkey? Cus I sure don't. My process is pull stuff out, think about it at work the next day instead of doing what I should be doing at work. Then come home, accidentally go into my studio before I cook supper. Forget to make supper until whatever I've come up with is finished and then eat, way too late for my digestion and
my weight. Ta Da! Love the spooky card, BTW.

you are so funny, do you know what, you so remind me of me, you poor thing, but if it creates fantastic work like this, then let it roll girl, great piece xxxx

Boozed up monkey - God, you're hysterical! I hate it when I have a vision and work at it forever and it doesn't come out. For some reason, I keep at it though, until finally in frustration I just get up and walk away, muttering under my breath, things a boozed up monkey might say. lol. I start with an idea, then start pulling stuff out, such as yourself, and hope that everything comes together. Sometimes it's further from my original idea than I would have thought, but that's art!

Well I love this, but really want to see the one that did not make it!!! I usually have no idea what I will do and just pull out one item and then build from that. I have had those "pieces" that I spent hours on and just could not finish! We all have been there and so glad to know it is not just me! Have a great day!

Your card turned out lovely. I too usually start with a definite idea, sometimes it happens and sometimes it don't. If it doesn't work I will try a variation on the idea and if that doesn't come together I try something else completely. But I will walk away, at that "boozed up monkey" stage, if I'm struggling too much. I don't throw anything away until I'm done, because sometimes I see the mess with new eyes and can make something I like out of it. Glad to know that we all have similar experiences!

I go in my craft room and sit and stare at the table until I either get an idea or go to bed. Sometimes I just gaze around the room and think about all the things I have in there and hopefully something jumps up and says "USE ME"

I love your project and it gave me the idea for mine...just bought those folders yesterday lol

I'm with you in that I start with one or two main things. Then I look for what goes with it, what I can add etc. The end result is nearly always not what I envisioned at the beginning.

Hi Linda, I've passed on a Cherry on Top Award to you. BUT I DO NOT expect you to take part in the process, with all you are doing-just consider it a hug.

I love your piece Linda! I am more like you, start with a vague idea and go from there. Mostly this works but if I am not sure about something I will walk away from it for a while.
When I come back I usually know if it is worth saving or just starting over.

Your card is fabulous! After your boozed up monkey finished the unseen card, I think he came in played in my studio! I am sure I could not have created the mess that is my studio! lol

I don't really have dominate style. Sometimes I have a vision and know exactly what I am going to do; sometimes I have a vision which evolves as I work; and at other times I don't have a clue of where I am going! It's always an adventure!

Hilarious Linda! For me, I usually visualize something and work toward it but have learned just to be pleased with what I end up with as it rarely looks as I had envisioned originally ;) I have done as you did, continued endlessly to make it work as I envisioned only to become frustrated with nothing to show for it. I have moments when it just flows and other moments where I just have to walk away and revisit it when the muse hits. I, too have had feelings that this somehow makes me an inferior artist but that is just my process. Glad I have come to accept it cuz I truly love creating ;)

I create much as you do. An idea in mind, and go with the flow. Although sometimes the flow is upward, and doesn't get me to the end quickly! I've never thought of myself as an artist by any means, but as a crafter. Paper of course! I see such wonderful creations that the ladies post, and makes me feel like a beginner!! But, if something I create doesn't appeal to me, I put it in a pile and may use pieces of it someday! It's the fun of playing in my craft room that most appeals to me!
