The newest challenge at Gingersnap Creations is based one of my favorite themes: Gothic Elements. Being a fan of both Jane Eyre and The Cure (Scott and I are currently arguing over whether The Cure was a goth band, and I say they were), I was especially excited to work on this one!
As things tend to go in my crafting life (and my regular life, come to think of it), this piece is not at all what I'd originally had in mind for this challenge. I was thinking, in fact, that a Gothic theme would be a great time to bust out some of those creepy-cool Stampotique images. But it was not to be, as Andrew Lloyd Webber stormed in and roundhouse kicked my muse out of the way so he could insinuate himself into the project. Let me tell you, Sir Andy is one stubborn dude.
"You WILL do a 'Phantom of the Opera'-inspired card, Ledbetter. And I will continue to play 'Music of Night' in your head, over and over, until you submit."
What was I supposed to do? I can't go around singing "Music of the Night" all the live long day. I have work to do. So I acquiesced, and made the card you see above.
I drew the mask, printed the lyrics using the Atomic Sushi font, and embellished with Tim's Tissue Tape, black netting and some inked-up silk flowers. The background involved many layers of black paint, tissue paper, and Golden Glass Bead gel mixed with red reinker (which, sadly, doesn't show up in the photo at all).
I still have "Music of the Night" in my head, by the way. Don't get me wrong, it's a gorgeous tune, but come on, Andrew!* Five days? Enough already.
Hopefully, you'll join this challenge without intrusion by Tony-Award-Winning composers, but either way, we're really looking forward to seeing what you create! This Gingersnap Creations challenge is open through—you guessed it!— October 31.
(*For the record, I adore Andrew Lloyd Webber.)

This turned out fabulously Linda. Don't you just hate that when you can't get a song out of your head!
I thought this absolutely gorgeous and creepy when I saw it on the GC blog and it got me singing too as I adore that song when sung by Sarah Brightman.

Terrific story and terrific piece of crafting Linda, love it to bits. Annette x
I simply adore this card, Linda! So spooky and mysterious! AWESOME!
So awesome!!!
I'm glad you acquiesced LInda, this is way cool. (and now I'm singing it and wearing a mask on my face. But one side only.)
LOVE how this turned out!! OH, and thanks a lot... now I have that song in my head too!!! LOL... (but really... I do!) Talk to you soon!
Ellen.
Fabulous! I saw the Phantom of the Opera in your piece right away. And you are correct - I would indeed classify the Cure as a goth band. I saw them, live, on the night before Halloween WAY back when. Then I met Robert Smith and Simon Gallup after the show. I actually worked for a college radio station and wrote for a local music magazine and got to interview them in NYC the next day (getting to meet a world-renowned photographer in the process and seeing Robin Zander of Cheap Trick in the hotel lobby). Those were the days...

Very cool card and I really enjoyed your relaying where your inspiration came from. Things are always brewing in the tank huh. I love the Phantom.
Beautiful!!! I had to enlarge her to see. I love the layers and the tulle. So many beautiful touches!
I was really surprised you didn't use one of your Stampotique images. But I understand Andy, he's in my head now!!!
Great goth look! I agree, I believe The Cure is and was a goth band in their era!
Love your style! and it is fun to see the different sides to a person's creativity.
I am SO LOVING! your piece!!! And now the Music of the Night is playing in my head...which is actually quite welcome at the moment. (I'll get back to you in a few days..LOL) Have a great weekend!

You have done an amazing job here. So very very different and ideal for the challenge!
I enjoyed reading your post, the card is amazing, and now I cannot stop thinking of the tune.
Fabulous piece, Linda. Love it. And now I've got the music in my brain too.

There is always so much going on in your house Linda! And now celebreties are visiting... and not only visiting - helping you with your cards.... I wonder if this might be called cheating! *LOL*
But ok, Mr. Webber is very good at that musical thing, but he sure looks like being good at making cards too. There are some people that just can do it all!
Great goth card. Love the spookyness of the hidden eye!
Take care!
Gunn
